Dear Residents of Lions Bay,
Early this morning, I was informed by the RCMP about a highly unsettling incident that occurred last night in our community. RCMP and Conservation Officers responded to reports of an aggressive bear that had entered a residence. It deeply saddens me to share that this was the second similar occurrence for this particular bear, leading the Conservation Service to make the difficult decision that the bear posed a risk to human life.
This incident is truly regrettable. I know how diligently many of you have been working to take all the proper precautions and follow recommended guidelines to avoid human-bear interactions. Please know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.
However, this incident highlights the need for us to enhance our community's practices to minimize such interactions further. In the coming days, my office will be providing additional resources, educational materials, and support to ensure that all residents have access to the most effective methods for living safely with our local wildlife.
I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to the RCMP and the Conservation Service. Their quick and decisive actions in the face of a potential threat helped keep our residents safe. We are incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated professionals looking out for our well-being.
As your Mayor, your safety and well-being are my top priorities. We will continue to work together as a community to address this challenge. I will keep you updated on our progress, and I welcome any thoughts or suggestions you may have.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Ken Berry, Mayor
Village of Lions Bay
